The short version
Your face never leaves your device. Smile8 analyzes camera frames in memory, on your computer, and immediately discards them. We never receive, store, or transmit images, video, facial landmarks, or any biometric data. Smile detection works with your internet connection turned off.
Consent
Before your camera is ever used, Smile8 asks for your explicit consent to on-device analysis of your facial expressions, and records that consent on your device. You can withdraw it at any time by pausing monitoring or uninstalling the app.
Expressions, not emotions
Smile8 detects a facial expression — whether the muscles of your face are forming a smile. It does not infer, score, record, or report your emotions, mood, or any inner state, and it is a personal wellness tool you choose to run on yourself, not a tool for anyone to monitor you.
What stays on your device
- Camera frames — analyzed in memory and discarded instantly; never written to disk
- Your calibration profile — a handful of numbers describing your neutral-face averages
- Your daily statistics — smile minutes, smile breaks, streaks
What we receive
- When you buy: your email address and payment details are processed by Paddle, our merchant of record, under Paddle's privacy policy. We receive your email address to deliver your license key.
- When you activate: your license key, a random device identifier, a device name, and platform (e.g. "macOS") — used solely to enforce the 3-device limit.
That's the complete list. Smile8 contains no analytics or tracking in the app, and the app makes no network requests during monitoring.
Your rights
Email hello@smile8.app to access or delete the data associated with your license (your email address and device activations). Local data can be deleted at any time by uninstalling the app.
